The English Football League Two, also known simply as League Two or as Sky Bet League Two for sponsorship reasons, is the 4th tier of English football and the lowest level of the English Football League (EFL), making it the last fully professional league in the pyramid. In a sport increasingly dominated at the top level by wealth and superstardom, League Two offers a more classic representation of the English game.
📜 League Two History
League Two was formally established in 2004, but it originated in 1958 when it was founded as the Fourth Division of English football. Its creation coincided with the Third Division – which at the time was divided into parallel North and South leagues – reuniting into a single competition as professional football transitioned from a more regional basis of organisation to a national one.
It became known as the Third Division in 1992 following the Premier League’s breakaway from the Football League, and in 2004 it rebranded as League Two after the First and Second Divisions became known as the Championship and League One, respectively.
💯 League Two Format & Scoring
Seasons typically start in either July or August and run through to the following May. League Two is comprised of 24 teams and every season they play every opponent home and away for a total of 46 matches apiece, using the usual system of 3 points awarded for a win, 1 for a draw, and 0 for a defeat. Teams are ranked on points, then goal difference, and then goals scored.
The top 2 teams are automatically promoted to League One. The teams that finish between 3rd and 6th qualify for the play-offs; they are separated into a bracket by league position (3rd vs. 6th, 4th vs. 5th) and play each other in 2-legged semifinals before the 2 remaining teams face off in the League Two Play-off Final. The bottom 2 teams are all relegated from the Football League, down to the semi-professional National League.
