Colchester United are a professional football team based in Colchester, England. They play their home games at Colchester Community Stadium, currently known as the JobServe Community Stadium.
📜 Colchester United History
The U's were founded in 1937. The area already had an amateur team in Colchester Town, but their struggles in the Eastern Counties League – and the reluctance of Town club officials to turn pro – prompted the creation of a new professional club. Town folded later that same year, with many of their players having signed for United's reserve team.
United entered the Football League in 1950 and spent several decades oscillating between the Third and Fourth Divisions. They were relegated from the EFL in 1990 after a period of decline, spending 2 seasons outside the Football League.
Colchester gained promotion back to the fourth tier in 1992, lifting the FA Trophy in the same season, and they were runners up in the EFL Trophy final in 1997.
In 2006, they reached the Championship, English football's second tier, for the first time. Although they would only manage 2 seasons there before suffering relegation, their first campaign was a strong one – they achieved the highest league position in their history finishing 10th, just 6 points off the playoffs.
