Visiting Germany
Germany is known as a land of fairy tales, festival events, and fanciful castles; but it is also home to some of Europe's most interesting big cities. The "hip today, gone tomorrow" buzz of Berlin is unmatched anywhere in Europe, but the urban hum of Hamburg certainly gives it a run for its money. Munich serves as the capital of the brewing and tradition-rich state of Bavaria, while Cologne and its stunning cathedral stand sentry over the Rhine. This great river and its sister the Moselle have carved gorgeous gorges, in which reside castle-crowned, vineyard-lined small towns. Other areas renowned for their natural beauty and romantic atmospheres are the Harz Mountains and the Black Forest (home to many a Brothers Grimm tale), the Bavarian Alps, and Saxon Switzerland. No matter where you are in Germany, you are never far from a charming timber-framed town, hearty meal, or refreshing local beer.
