Sportverein Werder Bremen von 1899 e. V. - often shortened to SV Werder Bremen or more commonly just Werder Bremen or Bremen - is a German professional football club based in the Free Hanseatic City of Bremen and is currently playing in the country's top tier Bundesliga. The club plays home games at Weserstadion.
Founded in early 1899 as FV Werder Bremen by a group of young students, the club takes its name from "Werder", the German word for "river peninsula". The club has been very successful throughout its history and - as well as being one of longest serving teams in the Bundesliga - it has taken the German championship on several occasions, won the DFB-Pokal 6 times, the DFL-Supercup 3 times, and the European Cup Winners' Cup once.
