Formed in the late 1940s as Kölner Ballspiel-Club 1901 and SpVgg Sülz 07 merged, the club's nickname is Die Geißböcke (The Billy Goats) referring to the mascot, a goat named Hennes after legendary former FC Köln player and manager Hennes Weisweiler. Since the merger of the 2 clubs, the side has seen much more consistent good form and has been playing between the top and second tier of the German football system. FC Köln were Bundesliga champions in 1963/64 and 1977/78 and have won the DFB-Pokal on several occasions.
