Swindon Town are a professional football club based in Swindon, England. Their home stadium has been the County Ground since 1896.
📜 Swindon Town History
The club was founded in 1879 by Reverend William Pitt. Known initially as Swindon AFC, they quickly changed their name to Spartans in 1880, before becoming Swindon Town 3 years later, shortly before they turned professional.
Swindon entered the Football League in 1920; they enjoyed an auspicious start to life in the EFL, thrashing Luton Town 9-1 in their first ever league fixture.
In 1969, the Robins upset Arsenal 3-1 to win the League Cup for the first time in their history. The victory would have earned them a place in the Inter-Cities Fairs Cup – the precursor to the UEFA Europa League – but since they were not in the top flight at the time they instead played in the 1969 Anglo-Italian League Cup and the 1970 Anglo-Italian Cup; Swindon won both competitions, beating the likes of AS Roma, SSC Napoli, and Juventus along the way.
In 1993, Swindon achieved promotion to the English top flight for the first time, but they relegated from the Premier League at the first attempt having conceded a record 100 goals.
