Salford City are a professional football club based in Salford, Greater Manchester, England. Since 1978 they have played their home games at Moor Lane.
📜 Salford City History
The club was founded in 1940. They were initially known as Salford Central having been named after a local church, before changing their name to Salford Amateurs in 1963 following their ascension to the Manchester Football League. Their nickname, the Ammies, is derived from that name.
After success in the Lancashire Amateur Cup and the Manchester Premier Cup in the 1970s, the club became known simply as Salford, before finally settling on the Salford City name in 1989.
In 2014, the club was taken over by the "Class of '92" – former Manchester United stars David Beckham, Paul Scholes, Gary and Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs, and Nicky Butt. The new ownership had a transformative impact on the fortunes of the club, which turned fully professional 3 years later.
Just 2 years after that, in 2019, Salford achieved promotion to the Football League for the first time in their history, and in 2021 they defeated Portsmouth on penalties to lift the EFL Trophy.
