Exeter City are a professional football club based in Exeter, England. Their home ground is St James Park – not to be confused with Newcastle United's St James' Park.
📜 Exeter City History
The club was founded in 1901, known at the time as St Sidwell's United. It was in 1904 that the team – which also incorporated players from another local club, Exeter United – changed their name to Exeter City. Their nickname, the Grecians, comes from the tradition of St Sidwell's residents often referring to themselves as Greeks or Grecians because they live outside the city walls.
In 1914, Exeter made history by becoming the first club to play against the Brazil national team during a tour of South America, and in 1920 they entered the Football League.
Amid increasing financial difficulties and administration, the Grecians were relegated from the EFL in 2003, spending 5 years outside it before returning in 2008, during which time they became fan-owned as the Exeter City Supporters' Trust became the majority shareholders.
