Gillingham FC are a professional football club based in Gillingham, England. Their home ground throughout their history has been Priestfield Stadium.
📜 Gillingham FC History
The club was founded in 1893 as New Brompton FC by a group of local businessmen, who were inspired by the success enjoyed by local junior team Chatham Excelsior. The adopted the Gillingham name in 1912.
Gillingham played in the Football League between 1920 and 1938, before returning in 1950 on the strength of local success in the Kent League and Southern League in the intervening period.
The Gills have spent most of their time in the decades since in either the third or fourth tiers, but in 2000 they did reach the second tier for the first time in their history with a 5-year stint in the Championship.
