Crewe Alexandra are a professional football club based in Crewe, England. They play their home games at Gresty Road, also known as the Alexandra Stadium and currently known as the Mornflake Stadium for sponsorship purposes.
📜 Crewe Alexandra History
Crewe Alexandra were founded in 1877 by players from a cricket club of the same name. Both clubs were named after Alexandra of Denmark, who at the time was Princess of Wales and later became the Queen consort of the United Kingdom as wife of King Edward VII.
Their nickname, the Railway Men, came from the close proximity of their first home at Alexandra Recreation Ground to Crewe railway station.
In 1892, Crewe became founding members of the Football League Second Division, a year after splitting from the cricket club. That same year, John Pearson became the first – and, to date, only – active Crewe player to feature for the England senior men's team.
Despite being an English team, Crewe were invited to participate in the Welsh Cup, lifting it twice in consecutive years in 1936 and 1937.
In 1983, Dario Gradi was appointed manager. He remained associated with the club in various roles for 36 years before his retirement in 2019, during which time he managed almost 1,400 matches. During his tenure at Crewe, the club returned to English football's second tier for the first time since 1896 and lifted the EFL Trophy in 2013.
