Northampton Town are a professional football club based in Northampton, England. Also known as the Cobblers in homage of the town's shoe-making history, the club plays their home games at Sixfields Stadium.
📜 Northampton Town History
The club was founded in 1897 by a group of locals – predominantly teachers, as well as a solicitor – during a gathering at The Princess Royal Inn on Wellingborough Road. The name was initially set to simply be Northampton Football Club, but the "Town" epithet was added following objections from the local rugby club.
Player-manager Herbert Chapman – who would later manage Huddersfield Town and more famously Arsenal to great success – led the Cobblers to the Southern League title in 1909 to give them a shot at the Charity Shield, but they were defeated in that game by First Division champions Newcastle United.
Between 1960 and 1969, Northampton climbed from the Fourth Division all the way to the First Division, only to be relegated all the way back down – the quickest any team has achieved such a feat in English football.
