📜 Accrington Stanley History
The current iteration of Stanley were founded in 1968, 2 years after the collapse of their original incarnation, who were established in 1891.
While the original incarnation spent almost 40 years playing in the Football League, it would take the new version almost that same length of time to get back there following their revival; it was not until 2006 that Accrington Stanley gained promotion into League Two.
The club had been aided in their promotion efforts by the transfer of Brett Ormerod between Blackpool and Southampton in 2001; Ormerod had been sold by Stanley to Blackpool in 1997 with a 25% sell-on clause, meaning they received a quarter of his £1.75 million transfer fee and the windfall had a transformative impact on their fortunes.
