York City Football Club is a professional football club from York, North Yorkshire, England. They play their home matches at the LNER Community Stadium. The club’s best-known nickname is the Minstermen, a reference to York Minster, though they have also been called the Robins and, during a famous cup run, the Happy Wanderers.
Formed in 1922, York City initially competed in regional football before joining the Football League later that decade. The club became renowned for upsetting bigger sides, notably reaching the FA Cup semi-finals in the 1950s and enjoying spells in the second tier in the 1970s. A Fourth Division title and a Wembley play-off triumph in the 1980s and early 1990s further cemented their reputation. After losing league status in the 2000s, York City rebuilt in non-league football, winning the FA Trophy at Wembley on more than one occasion and securing promotions back up the pyramid. They remain celebrated for their community roots and giant-killing exploits in national competitions, including the League Cup.
