French football’s top tier has announced the schedule for the coming season with fixtures kicking off on 12 August 2023 and running through to the weekend of 18-19 May 2024.
2023/24 Key Ligue 1 Fixtures
Last season, Paris Saint-Germain claimed a record-breaking 11th title, but it was perhaps closer than many would expect with the long list of stars PSG has on its books. Despite bringing in an impressive array of players this summer - Marco Asensio, Kang-in Lee, and Lucas Hernández to name a few - PSG will remember this transfer window as the one where they said goodbye to huge names such as Sergio Ramos and, of course, Lionel Messi. With just a year left on his contract and the club not wanting him to leave on a free in 2024, Kylian Mbappe's future is also surrounded by question marks.
No doubt many fans will have the dates for Le Classique between PSG and Olympique Marseille marked in their diaries with the Parc des Princes leg taking place on 24 September 2023 and the Stade Vélodrome leg scheduled for 21 March 2024. Other derby dates to keep an eye on include the Derby du Nord (Lens v Lille on 8 October 2023 and Lille v Lens on 21 March 2024), the Derby Breton (Rennes v Nantes on 1 October 2023 and Nantes v Rennes on 21 April 2024), and the Derby de la Côte d'Azur (Monaco v Nice on 24 September 2023 and Nice v Monaco on 11 February 2024).
2023/24 Ligue 1 Teams
From this season, Ligue 1 has changed to an 18-team format! The teams will play each other home and away for a total of 34 matches apiece. To fit with the new format, at the end of the 2022/23 season, Auxerre, Ajaccio, Angers, and Troyes were relegated to Ligue 2 while Le Havre and Metz were promoted to Ligue 1. The 18 teams competing in the 2023/24 season are as follows:
- AS Monaco
- Stade Brestois
- Clermont Foot
- FC Lorient
- FC Metz
- FC Nantes
- FC Toulouse
- Le Havre
- LOSC Lille
- Olympique Marseille
- Montpellier HSC
- OGC Nice
- Olympique Lyonnais
- Paris Saint-Germain
- RC Lens
- RC Strasbourg Alsace
- Stade Reims
- Stade Rennais
Teams will be hoping to finish in the top positions in the table with first taking the title as well as a UEFA Champions League place. The teams in 2nd and 3rd place will also qualify for the Champions League, while 4th place qualifies for the UEFA Europa League as does the team that finishes 5th if the winners of the Coupe de France also finish in the top 4.
