Olympique de Marseille – commonly shortened to Olympique Marseille or simply to Marseille – is a French professional football club based in Marseille and currently playing in the country’s top tier Ligue 1. The club plays home games at Stade Vélodrome.
Founded in August 1899, Marseille was originally an omnisport conglomerate consisting of teams in different sports; initially, rugby was the most successful of these. From the early 1900s, football began being played and grew in popularity and success having a strong period during the 1920s. After some rise and fall, Marseille saw more success in 1990s. The club has won numerous league titles, Coupe de France titles, Coupe de la Ligue titles, and much more.
