The elite tier of Italian football has announced the schedule for the coming season. Fixtures start on 19 August 2023 and run through to 26 May 2024, and if there’s one thing we can expect, it’s drama!
2023/24 Key Serie A Fixtures
Last season, Napoli had an undeniably impressive campaign, and – although it looked a certainty weeks earlier – they claimed the title in early May. If the Neapolitans have managed to recover from their celebrations, they’ll be looking ahead to Napoli’s opening game away against newly promoted Frosinone on 19 August 2023. Many fans will have the dates of the Derby del Sole marked down with Napoli traveling to the Stadio Olimpico to play Roma on 22 December 2023 and the return fixture at Stadio Diego Armando Maradona on 27 April 2024.
As a league full of intense and passionate rivalries, there are many fixtures to note down in the diary. Perhaps the most heated of these is the Derby della Capitale between Roma and Lazio with the 2 Stadio Olimpico fixtures scheduled for 11 November 2023 and 6 April 2024. The saying goes that “in Milan, they talk about the derby for a week, but in Rome, they talk about it for a year”.
That’s not to say the Milan derby is any less anticipated, and the 2 San Siro fixtures take place on 16 September 2023 and 20 April 2024. Inter fans will also be excited for the feisty Derby d’Italia against bitter rival Juventus with the first scheduled for 25 November 2023 (Allianz Arena) and the second for 3 February 2024 (San Siro)
2023/24 Serie A Teams
The 20 teams will play each other home and away for a total of 38 matches apiece. At the end of the 2022/23 season, Spezia, Cremonese, and Sampdoria were relegated to Serie B while Frosinone, Genoa, and Cagliari were promoted to Serie A. The 20 teams competing in the 2023/24 season are as follows:
- AC Milan
- AC Monza
- AS Roma
- Atalanta
- Bologna
- Cagliari
- Empoli
- Fiorentina
- Frosinone
- Genoa CFC
- Hellas Verona
- Inter Milan
- Juventus
- Lecce
- Salernitana
- Sassuolo
- SS Lazio
- SSC Napoli
- Torino
- Udinese
Teams will be hoping to finish in the top positions in the table with first taking the title as well as a UEFA Champions League place. The teams in 2nd to 4th place will also qualify for the Champions League, while 5th place qualifies for the UEFA Europa League as does the team that finishes 6th if the winners of the Coppa Italia also finish in the top 5.
