Genoa Cricket and Football Club - more commonly known as Genoa CFC or simply Genoa - is an Italian professional footbal club based in Genoa, Italy. Genoa play home games at Stadio Luigi Ferraris in the north of the city.
Founded in September 1893 as Genoa Cricket & Athletic Club in order to serve as a representation of England abroad, the club's original kit - and their current crest - featured elements of the St. George's Cross. From 1897, the football side of the club became more significant and for the first time, Italian (not just British players) were permitted to join. As one of the oldest clubs in Italy, Genoa played in the very first Italian Championship when the Italian Football Federation was formed in 1898. They were also the first Italian club to play an international match when they travelled to face FVC Nice in 1903. Since World War II, Genoa had struggled to compete with the top teams in Serie A and have spent some time in lower divisions, but in recent years, they have been playing top tier football once again!
