Genoa Sports Events
Genoa is particularly known for its long-standing football tradition. Two professional football teams call Genoa their home: Genoa Cricket and Football Club, commonly known as Genoa C.F.C., and Unione Calcio Sampdoria, referred to as Sampdoria. Both teams have a long history in Italian football and share the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, often affectionately referred to as Marassi, after the neighbourhood in which it sits. The stadium, one of Italy's oldest and most revered arenas, provides a vibrant and atmospheric setting for Serie A matches, the top tier of Italian football.
The city's basketball, water polo, and rugby teams add to the diverse sports culture. Water polo especially has a strong tradition here, with the city often hosting national and international fixtures.
Visiting Genoa
Genoa sits along the sparkling Ligurian coast, and presents a captivating concoction of maritime heritage and artistic splendour. As one of Europe's largest medieval quarters, its warren of alleys (known as 'caruggi') invites visitors to a bygone era, while the illustrious Porto Antico, revitalised by architect Renzo Piano, brims with modern attractions. The birthplace of Christopher Columbus boasts resplendent palaces along the UNESCO-listed Via Garibaldi, hinting at its rich history as a powerful maritime republic. Genoa's alluring blend of ancient churches, sumptuous cuisine – including the famed pesto – and a vibrant cultural scene makes it an enthralling destination for discerning travellers looking to immerse themselves in authentic Italian charm.
