📜 LPGA Tour History
The LPGA (Ladies Professional Golf Association) was founded in 1950, making it the oldest women’s sports organisation in the United States still in existence. It succeeded the WPGA (Women’s Professional Golf Association), which was founded in 1944 but ceased operations in 1949.
The LPGA Tour was inaugurated with the Tampa Women’s Open in 1950, and it has continued to grow in both size and stature over the years; this is reflected in the increasingly high standard of play and improved prize money offerings we see today.
💯 LPGA Tour Format & Scoring
The LPGA Tour season typically runs from January to November and boasts a combined prize money total of more than $100 million. In addition to prize money, players competing on the tour also earn Race to the CME Globe points.
At the end of the season, the top 60 players qualify for the season-ending CME Group Tour Championship, which offers the most points and boasts the highest prize fund in women’s golf after the US Women’s Open. At the conclusion of the season finale, the player with the most points is crowned the Race to the CME Globe winner and earns a $2 million bonus.
