Indian Wells, “Tennis Paradise”, "the fifth Grand Slam” - the BNP Paribas Open may go by many names, but tennis fans the world over know exactly what you’re talking about when you mention the iconic tournament: highly-ranked players, fantastic tennis, gorgeous Californian desert, and 2 of the most anticipated weeks in the professional tennis calendar. The 2023 tournament is set to take place between 6-19 March, and whilst the presence of the event’s picturesque Palm Springs locale was never in doubt, the full player roster was yet to be confirmed, leaving fans guessing as to who would be attending, and who would be missing out – until now!
This week’s player field announcement will have only served to increase excitement ahead of the joint ATP Masters 1000 and WTA 1000 tournament, with plenty of top-20 stars commited to the event in both the men’s and women’s draws.
In the men’s singles field, 2023 Australian Open champion and world number 1 Novak Djokovic will headline the draw. Carlos Alcaraz, the previous men’s number 1, did not feature in Melbourne earlier in the year, but he will be fit in time for Indian Wells, and will be looking to lead the charge against the Serb. Another player who will be keen to topple Djokovic will be Stefanos Tsitsipas, who lost-out in the Australian Open final. Other youngsters such as Casper Ruud, Andrey Rublev, Felix Auger-Aliassime, and Holger Rune will also be keen to reach the tournament’s latter stages, whilst 2022 Indian Wells champion Taylor Fritz will be looking to make it 2 trophies on the trot, in his native California. As well as a host of young guns, however, the 2023 men’s draw will also welcome back veteran and 2022 losing finalist Rafael Nadal, with the Spaniard posing an ever-present threat to up-and-coming players everywhere!
The women’s draw is equally as competitive, with world number 1 and 2022 champion Iga Świątek in “Pole” position. Behind her, the rest of the top-14 players in the world will also be in attendance, with top-class talents such as 2023 Australian Open champion Aryna Sabalenka, former world number 2 Ons Jabeur, and 2022 WTA Finals champion Caroline Garcia sure to fight hard in California. Younger players such as Coco Gauff and 2023 Australian Open finalist Elena Rybakina will also be amongst the top seeds. Outside of the top-14, 2021 BNP Paribas Open winner Paula Badosa, American favourite Danielle Collins, and Canadian starlet Leylah Fernandez will also be ones to watch.
Tickets for the 2023 BNP Paribas Open are still available to purchase, with single session tickets and multi-session packages available across the 3 main show courts, and ground passes available for those who want to watch the action on the outer courts.
