Stefanos Tsitsipas is a professional tennis player, born in Athens in 1998. He is the highest-ranked male Greek singles player of all time.
Tsitsipas first picked up a tennis racquet at the age of 3, influenced by his parents who were both former tennis players. His 3 younger siblings all also play tennis.
In 2016, Tsitsipas became junior world number 1, having already featured in ITF Futures and Challengers events. His first main draw appearance at ATP level came in 2017, at the ABN AMRO Open, and his first ATP win came later that year, in Shanghai. By 19 years old, Tsitsipas was ranked inside the top 100 players in the world, and had already surpassed all Greek rankings records for a male player.
By the end of 2018, Tsitsipas had climbed to 15th in the world. His incredible ascent in just a year was helped by strong showings at the Barcelona Open, Estoril Open, Wimbledon, the National Bank Open - where he defeated top-10 players Dominic Thiem, Novak Djokovic, Alexander Zverev, and Kevin Anderson - and the Stockholm Open, where he claimed his first ever ATP singles title. At the end of the 2018 season Tsitsipas won the Next Gen ATP Finals event. Just a year later he would win the ATP Finals tournament, the fully-fledged version of the Next Gen competition, having won 3 further singles titles and risen to number 5 in the singles rankings. In winning the ATP Finals at the age of 21, Tsitsipas became the event's youngest winner since 2001. The 2019 season also saw the Greek reach the Australian Open semifinals, then his best showing in a Grand Slam tournament.
Across 2020 and 2021, Tsitsipas cemented his reputation as one of the "best of the rest", and a future Grand Slam contender. He became world number 3 towards the end of 2021, the result of a win at the Monte-Carlo Masters, another appearance in the Australian Open semifinals, and an appearance in the Roland-Garros final. His defeat in Paris to Novak Djokovic occurred in agonising fashion - the match was played shortly after the death of his grandmother, and saw him squander a 2-set lead. In 2022 Tsitsipas successfully defended his Monte-Carlo title.
Stefanos Tsitsipas is known for his aggressive style of play, characterised by fearsome groundstrokes hit from the baseline. His forehand is very strong, and he possesses a good one-handed backhand.
Friendly staff, good atmosphere
Attended the finals of ATP 250 at Maccorca. Attended, also, the 2nd round of ATP 250 at Athens. The quality was more or less the same which made me to believe that the quality of the tennis level received in Athens was actually higher than any other regular ATP 250 event. No doubt that this is only happenned thanks to Novak Djokovic! Thank you GOAT. In details the court was fantastic, the people supportive, the event very organized. Please continue like that and I am sure that the next year's event will be even better!
