The BNP Paribas Open, also known as the Indian Wells Masters, is a tennis event which serves as the kick-off event of the ATP Masters 1000 season, in addition to being a WTA 1000 tournament. Initially a successor event to the American Airlines Tennis Games, a non-tour competition, the tournament relocated to California from Arizona in 1976 and quickly became a highlight of the professional circuit. American Jimmy Connors won the event's inaugural edition in the Golden State, trumping a star-studded field which included Arthur Ashe, Björn Borg, and Rod Laver!
Staged at the gorgeous Indian Wells Tennis Garden in California's picturesque Coachella Valley, the tournament is beloved by players and fans alike for a magical combination of thrilling on-court action and sunny skies, mesmerising mountain vistas, and pastel-streaked sunsets, all of which have earnt the venue the nickname "Tennis Paradise." The event is regularly attended by upwards of 400,000 spectators, making it the best-attended tennis tournament in the world outside of the 4 Grand Slams, with attendees revelling in both the world-class tennis and the bubbly, sociable atmosphere of the event.
