Iga Świątek is a Polish tennis player, and one of the youngest ever women's singles champion at a Grand Slam.
📜 Iga Świątek History
Świątek was born in Warsaw, Poland, in 2001, and began playing tennis with her sister as a child. A successful junior player, Świątek won the 2018 Wimbledon girl's singles title, and was soon appearing consistently at ITF events. By the end of 2019, the 18-year-old Świątek was in the top-50 of the WTA singles rankings, having only broken into the top-100 that same year!
Świątek's first WTA singles title came in extraordinary circumstances: in 2020 the Pole won the Roland-Garros title, becoming the first player from her country to win a Grand Slam singles trophy. Świątek won the tournament without dropping a set, and also reached the semifinals of the doubles draw. In 2021, Świątek reached the fourth round of both Wimbledon and the US Open. A year later, the Pole reached the semifinals at the Australian Open, and then, on the back of an incredible 35-match winning run, regained her Roland-Garros title, defeating Coco Gauff in the final. In 2023 she defended her title in Paris, securing her fourth Grand Slam singles trophy.
Świątek plays aggressively, employing a versatile all-court game in which she tries to put her opponents on the back foot. Her forehand and backhand are notably strong; she is capable of hitting the forehand in particular with incredible amounts of topspin. Świątek's serve is also very good, whether hit with power, slice, or an unpredictable bounce. Paired with her exceptional athleticism, this makes her a formidable clay court player - though she is proficient on all surfaces.
