As the fourth and final Grand Slam tournament of the year, the United States Open is one of the biggest tennis tournaments in the world. The tournament’s origins date back to the US National Championships, which were first played in Newport, Rhode Island, in 1881. Originally a grass court tournament for US-based men's singles players only, the event gradually expanded to include female players, doubles draws, and international stars. The event also relocated during its early years: having moved between New York, Philadelphia, and Chestnut Hill, Massachusetts, since 1915, the then-renamed US Open made its permanent home in "the Big Apple" in 1968.
The US Open is now hosted at the city's USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, and is played on a hard court surface. The impressive grounds consist of 22 outdoor courts, including the main court in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, which provides a Colosseum-like feel with its nearly 24,000 person capacity, allowing huge crowds to gather annually at this event, to see the world’s best players give their all for the year’s last chance to earn a Grand Slam title. Being part of a US Open crowd is a singular experience in the tennis world; the fans who pack into the stadium courts are famed for their enthusiasm – as well as the noise they make!
