MLB’s revamped playoff system got off to a thrilling start over the weekend as the best-of-3-games Wild Card Series saw 4 teams keep their hopes of winning the World Series alive. The Philadelphia Phillies, Seattle Mariners, Cleveland Guardians, and San Diego Padres were the lucky teams to advance from this unpredictable stage of the playoffs, setting up some intriguing Division Series matchups later this week.
The Division Series, which is effectively the quarterfinal stage of the postseason, will take place between 11–17 October. The best-of-5 series provides the higher-seeded team with home advantage for the first 2 games, and a possible tiebreaker fifth game if the series is tied after 4.
On the American League side of the bracket, the #1 Seed Houston Astros will face the Seattle Mariners, while the #2 Seed New York Yankees, led by record-breaking Home Run King Aaron Judge, will take on the Cleveland Guardians. In the National League, the San Diego Padres face a tough series against the Los Angeles Dodgers – a #1 Seed with the best record in baseball this year – while the Philadelphia Phillies will do battle with the #2 Seed Atlanta Braves, who are looking to become the first back-to-back World Series winners since 1998. Tickets for playoff baseball always sell quickly, but Division Series seats (and standing tickets) are still available, starting at around $41.
A week from today, with the Division Round in the books, baseball fans will know the 4 teams taking part in the Championship Series of the playoffs, but no matter who advances, the best-of-7 series is sure to provide some fascinating contests. With a place in the World Series on the line, AL and NL Championship games have been home to some of the most iconic moments in baseball, as teams fight it out for the pennant, and a place in history. Baseball fans can secure tickets for these games, which take place between 18–26 November, from $116.
Ultimately, everything in the MLB playoffs leads towards the World Series. In 2022, baseball’s most famous event will play out between 28 October – 5 November as the AL and NL Champions slug it out in a best-of-7 series graced by the likes of Babe Ruth, Joe DiMaggio, Jackie Robinson and Willie Mays. Drama, action, and brilliant baseball are all guaranteed in this year’s quest for immortality, and with tickets available soon, you can be there to see the winners hoist the trophy in a shower of confetti as another great year of MLB comes to a close.
