📜 Philadelphia Phillies History
The oldest MLB team to bear the same name and play in the same city as when they were established, the Philadelphia Phillies were founded in the City of Brotherly Love in 1883. A team with a long history and passionate fanbase, the Phillies have been a mainstay of the National League's East Division since it was launched in 1969, and have won 14 division titles (including 5 consecutive wins between 2007–2011) in the process. The franchise has also won the National League pennant 8 times, and the World Series on 2 occasions – in 1980 and 2008.
During the team's history, the Phillies have played in a number of stadiums, including Baker Bowl, Shibe Park, and Veterans Stadium. The franchise moved into its current home, South Philadelphia's Citizens Bank Park, in 2004, and has since grown the venue into a fan-friendly ballpark known for award-winning local food, an enormous electronic Liberty Bell, and the iconic Philadelphia skyline rising up beyond the outfield.
The Phillies' longevity led the franchise to become the first in America to amass 10,000 losses in 2007, but the side is also just one of 9 teams to have won over 10,000 games too. Consequently, the life of a Phillies fan is never dull, and the franchise is characterized by its loyal fanbase and raucous following. Led by talismanic outfielder Bryce Harper, the Phillies have ambitions to repay their supporters' faith going forward and add to the franchise's storied legacy by winning their first World Series since 2008.
