📜 New York Yankees History
Arguably the most successful professional sports team in US history, the Yankees hold MLB records for American League East division titles, American League Pennants, and World Series championships. Through the years, many of baseball's greatest players have donned the Yankees' famous white and blue pinstriped uniforms, including legends of the game like Mickey Mantle, Joe DiMaggio, Lou Gehrig, and, of course, Babe Ruth.
Affectionately known as the "Bronx Bombers" or the "Pinstripers", the Yankees won multiple World Series titles in the 1920s, 1930s, 1940s, 1950s, 1960s, 1970s, 1990s, and 2000s. This rich history and winning tradition means that expectations are always sky-high when the team steps on to the field.
In an attempt to maintain professional standards on and off the baseball diamond, the Yankees operate one of the quirkiest policies in sport; since the reign of late owner George Steinbrenner, club rules have stated that players must be "clean-shaven or keep a tidy mustache." Hair "below the collar" is also banned.
Today, the New York Yankees are worth around $5 billion, making them the second-most valuable sports franchise in the world. Sustained success and popularity have even seen the Yankees break free of the boundaries of sport and carve a niche for themselves in the fashion world – even those unfamiliar with the team, or ambivalent towards baseball, can be seen wearing caps and clothing adorned with the Yankees' famous NY logo.
