Parking passes can often be purchased online in advance of major events at the circuit, but these tend to sell out very quickly. Unofficial parking in the circuit area is limited, and parking rules are strictly enforced by local police. Nearby traffic will be highly congested on event days.
International visitors to Japan may find driving in the country very difficult, as road signs are written in kanji script and tolls are common. Drivers must hold a valid international driving permit along with their standard license.
Taxis are plentiful in Japan and prices are quite low, although they go up by around 20% between 22:00 and 05:00. Traffic congestion is likely during major events, so do not expect a speedy journey to the circuit.
Visitors who do not speak Japanese are strongly advised to show the taxi driver the address of their desired destination written in Japanese, or point to it on a map. Most taxis have doors that the driver opens remotely, so passengers should not usually try to open or close the doors themselves.
One of the easiest ways to reach the circuit is to take a shuttle bus from Shiroko train station. Details of how to reach Shiroko by train are available in Train Travel Information.
At Shiroko, signs should be posted in both Japanese and English to direct fans towards the shuttle buses. These cost around ¥400 (USD $3) and take approximately 15 minutes to reach the circuit. Tickets can be purchased from a counter at the station, and buses run every 15-30 minutes. Passengers must walk around 10 minutes from the shuttle drop-off point to the circuit entrance.
Most fans access the circuit by train, and there are multiple route options. Many visitors to Japan use a JR Pass, which can only be purchased outside the country. The JR Pass can cover 7, 14, or 21 days and allows unlimited travel on all JR train (including shinkansen bullet trains), bus, and ferry networks.
