After recent announcements across the globe reinstating COVID-19 restrictions, it might feel like one step forward and two steps back. However, there is hope for sporting events of the coming spring and summer that motivates us to clear each hurdle as we reach it. On 21 December, the Wanda Diamond League released more details for next year’s competitions with scheduled disciplines for each meet being allocated.
The Wanda Diamond League is one of the premier athletics competitions on the planet, bringing together the best athletes in the sport for a series of dramatic one-day meetings in some of the world's most exciting cities. Created in 2010 to enhance the standing and appeal of athletics around the world, the Diamond League is a mixture of long-established European athletics meets and their equivalents in Asia, Africa, and North America.
There are 14 meets across the year and in the first 13 events, athletes will earn points in a bid to qualify for their place in the Zürich final, with the ultimate champion of each discipline being decided in a "winner takes all" finale show-down. The 2022 meets are as follows:
- 13 May - Doha (Qatar Sports Club (Suheim bin Hamad) Stadium)
- 21 May - London/Birmingham (Alexander Stadium)
- 28 May - Eugene (Hayward Field)
- 5 June - Rabat (Prince Moulay Abdellah Stadium)
- 9 June - Rome (Stadio Olimpico)
- 16 June - Oslo (Bislett Stadium)
- 18 June - Paris (Stade Sébastien Charléty)
- 30 June - Stockholm (Stockholm Olympic Stadium)
- 30 July - Shanghai (Shanghai Stadium)
- 6 August - Shenzhen (Bao’an Stadium)
- 10 August - Monaco (Stade Louis II)
- 26 August - Lausanne (Stade Olympique de la Pontaise)
- 2 September - Brussels (King Baudouin Stadium)
- 7-8 September - Zürich (Letzigrund)
In even more exciting news, tickets are already on sale for the Stockholm and the Brussels events with admission starting from just €29.08 (300 kr/£24.77) for the former and €25 (£22.92) for the latter!
If you can’t wait until May to get your track and field fix, there are several indoor meetings including the Indoor Grand Prix Birmingham (19 February), the UK Athletics Indoor Championships (26-27 February), and the World Athletics Indoor Championships (18-20 March) already on sale! For spectators looking forward to the roar of an open-air stadium, the World Athletics Championships (15-24 July) in Eugene and the European Athletics Championships (15-21 August) in Munich have also released tickets.
