The Golden Gala - Pietro Mennea is the Italian round of the top-tier athletics series, the Diamond League, and it takes place in the Stadio Olimpico in Rome. This annual Italian event was first held in 1981 to bring together athletes who boycotted the 1980 Moscow Olympics as a result of the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan. After the death of Italian sprinter Pietro Mennea in 2013, the event title was extended to add his name.
