The Prefontaine Classic is an annual track and field meet held at Hayward Field in Eugene. The first event was held in 1975, emerging out of two previous competitions that were organised to raise funds for grandstand repairs. This new event was originally called the Bowerman Classic after University of Oregon track coach and Nike founder Bill Bowerman. However, after the unexpected death of University of Oregon Olympian Steve Prefontaine, a last-minute decision was made to rename the event to the Prefontaine Classic just days before opening. The Prefontaine Classic has been part of the Diamond League series since its inauguration in 2010.
