PGA Tour Champions is the world's premier men's senior golf tour. Held almost exclusively in the United States, it is only open to players over the age of 50.
PGA Tour Champions fields are rife with major-winning stars, and with almost 30 professional events held each season, there are plenty of opportunities to watch some of golf's legendary players in action, from Phil Mickelson and Bernhard Langer to Ernie Els and Darren Clarke.
📜PGA Tour Champions History
PGA Tour Champions was first established in 1980, 2 years after the inaugural Legends of Golf event – which featured the sport's older stars at the time – was held to great success.
Prior to that, the only high-profile senior golf event that had been held was the Senior PGA Championship, which had been running since 1937.
Originally named the Senior PGA Tour, it became known as the Champions Tour in 2002 and then adopted the PGA Tour Champions moniker in 2016.
💯 PGA Tour Champions Format & Scoring
The PGA Tour Champions season runs from January to November or December each year.
It follows a similar format to the PGA Tour, with players accumulating points in a season-long race that culminates in a tour championship, in this case the Charles Schwab Cup Championship.
Unlike the PGA Tour and other major golf tours, however, most tournaments aside from the majors are held over 3 rounds (54 holes) instead of the traditional 4.
Most events are held in the standard stroke play format, in which the winner is the player with the lowest number of strokes across all rounds.
