The island city-state of Singapore is considered one of the most expensive places to stay in the world. So whilst there are plenty of budget hotels within and near the city centre, they are generally much pricier than the average city. Marina Bay, along with the neighbouring Downtown Core, is considered the tourist and commercial centre of the city. Those staying in this area will have all of Singapore’s top attractions at their feet including Gardens by the Bay and the ArtScience Museum.
To see Singapore’s cultural side, stay in Fort Canning, the colonial district of Singapore. Here, you’ll find the city’s best museums including the National Museum of Singapore, the National Gallery, and the Asian Civilisations Museum, as well as outstanding colonial architecture, exemplified by the Raffles Hotel.
Those who want to see what the city has to offer at night will find it in Clarke Quay where its most renowned bars and clubs are located. This district is just a few minutes away from Downtown, as well as malls, museums, and theatres.
Families will feel more at home on Sentosa Island which features an exciting theme and water parks, and much more. Alternatively, they may prefer the HarbourFront because while it has its fair share of hotels, restaurants, and shops, it is much quieter than the neighbouring Marina Bay district and it’s just a short walk from the island.
To experience a more traditional side of Singapore, swap the skyscrapers of Downtown for the historic townhouses of Chinatown. Although it’s just minutes away from the core, its transports you into a different, far more cultural world.
Singapore is connected by the Mass Rapid Transit system, a web of underground trains which make it easy to explore the city from wherever you are staying.
