Melbourne Park

The home of the Australian Open Grand Slam tennis tournament, Melbourne Park is a sports complex situated in the Melbourne Sports precinct, located in close proximity to the Melbourne Cricket Ground and AAMI Park.

📜 History

A formal arena, then known as Olympic Park, was first constructed on the site of Melbourne Park in 1933, but sporting competitions, recreational and leisure activities, and entertainment events had taken place in the area since at least the beginning of the 20th century. In 1946, the Olympic Park arena was demolished in preparation for a redevelopment which would equip the site for the 1956 Summer Olympics, which were hosted in Melbourne.

In 1988, ahead of the Australian Open's proposed move to the venue, Melbourne Park was redeveloped further, becoming the home of Australia's national tennis centre; many of the now-iconic show courts which host the Australian Open Grand Slam each year were built, with further arenas added in the early 21st century, in preparation for Melbourne's Commonwealth Games hosting duties in 2006.

Today located within a stone's throw of both the Melbourne Cricket Ground and AAMI Park, Melbourne Park is never far from sporting spectacle. As well as the annual Australian Open tennis tournament, Melbourne Park hosts regular basketball and netball matches, and it has also hosted cycling events and motorsport races. Melbourne Park has also staged numerous concerts, with acts such as AC/DC, Bryan Adams, and David Bowie having performed at the venue.

Melbourne Park houses a wide range of venues, from large, multi-purpose arenas to smaller tennis courts and practice areas. The main arenas are:

• Rod Laver Arena - primary arena with an approximately 15,000-person capacity
• Margaret Court Arena - secondary arena with an approximately 7,500-person capacity
• John Cain Arena - tertiary arena with an approximately 10,300-person capacity

Rod Laver Arena is the main show court at the Australian Open, but it also hosts events outside of the Grand Slam - including ice hockey matches! John Cain Arena is also a multi-purpose venue during the rest of the year, with Suncorp Super Netball teams the Collingwood Magpies and Melbourne Vixens calling it home.

Ticket prices for events at Melbourne Park can vary considerably depending on the event in question, and the specific arena for which tickets are valid. During the Australian Open, when all major arenas are in use, tickets which grant access to Rod Laver Arena will typically cost more than tickets for Margaret Court Arena or John Cain Arena. Ticket prices may be more competitively priced when only one event is required, however - for example during basketball, ice hockey, or netball matches.
