Melbourne United are a professional basketball team who play in the National Basketball League (NBL). Based in Melbourne, Australia, they play their home games at the John Cain Arena in Melbourne Park.
📜 Melbourne United History
Melbourne United were founded in 1984 as the Melbourne Tigers, a name they bore until a controversial change in 2014.
Their history stretches back further, however, to 1975 as the Tigers played in the South Eastern Basketball League. After winning the SEBL in 1983, a new entity bearing the Tigers name entered the NBL the following year.
The Tigers struggled to get going in the premier division; in 4 of their first 5 seasons, they finished the campaign with a single figure number of wins. Most notably, they ended the 1987 season with a 3-23 record, despite club MVP Andrew Gaze averaging 44.1 points per game – an NBL record that still stands to this day.
However, since reaching their first NBL Grand Final in 1992, the club have not looked back, starting with their first championship the following year, and they're now among the NBL's most successful teams after the Perth Wildcats with multiple titles under their belt.
