MLB hosts a 162-game season each summer featuring 29 American teams and 1 team from Canada. The larger league is divided into 2 smaller leagues (the National League and the American League), with 3 divisions (East, Central, and West) of 5 teams in each.
MLB games do not have a time limit. Instead, games are divided into 9 innings. If teams are tied at the end of this regulation period, the game continues an inning at a time until one team proves victorious.
2–3 minute breaks take place between innings during MLB games. A slightly longer break known as the "7th Inning Stretch" is held between the halves of the 7th inning. Most MLB teams play a singalong rendition of "Take Me Out to the Ballgame" at this time.
Rather than being points-based, MLB standings are worked out with the use of win-loss records. At the end of the regular season, teams are ranked by their win percentage. The winner of each division, plus the 3 next-best performing teams in both the National League and American League, qualify for the playoffs. The last 2 teams standing – one from the NL, one from the AL – then face off in the World Series. The winner of this best-of-7 season finale takes home the Commissioner's Trophy, and earns the right to call themselves the best in MLB.
