Spa may be a small town in a valley of the Ardennes mountains in rural eastern Belgium, but it has a big presence on the country’s map. It first came to prominence in the 14th century as a spa town renowned for its mineral springs with healing properties. Since then, Spa’s springs gained more and more popularity and today it is a top Belgian destination known for its spas and wellness centres — and its production of spring water. Since 1925, it has also been popularised by the Circuit de Spa-Francorchamps which hosted the Belgian Grand Prix every year thereafter. Besides its two (rather impressive) claims to fame, the town itself boasts a charming 19th-century Belgian style and a relaxed upmarket atmosphere that make it a pleasure to visit any time of year.
To reach Spa, fly to Brussels International Airport (BRU) which provides direct flights to many major cities worldwide. The airport is located 135 km northwest of Spa, which can be reached in around 1.5 hours by car or taxi, or in around three hours by public transport. If travelling by public transport, take the S2 3664 Leuven train from Zaventem station to Leuven followed by the IC 514 Eupen train to Verviers-Central. From there, take the 395 Malmedy Gare bus to Tiege Charmille followed by the 295 Spa Gare bus to Spa Place Royale.
