One of flat racing’s most prestigious meetings began under rainclouds on Friday, but the action on the course was not to be dampened. The Oaks – a Group 1 flat race specifically for 3-year-old female horses which serves as the middle leg of the Fillies’ Triple Crown between Newmarket’s 1,000 Guineas and Doncaster’s St Leger – was won by a record-breaking 16 lengths. Flat racing pro, Frankie Dettori won his sixth Oaks, this time on Snowfall whose speed and stamina pulling away in the finishing straight was something to behold.
It was not just the Oaks that enjoyed high drama: the Derby had quite the backstory by the time the riders crossed the finish line. Just 2 days after he was replaced on one of the favourites for the big race by none other than Dettori, Adam Kirby won “the greatest flat race in the world” on 16-1 shot Adayar. A jubilant yet calm Kirby spoke of not being bitter but better about the last-minute change of jockeys and it definitely paid off. In his post-race interview, he rejoiced through a smile, "this is the Derby lads - get in there!"
Some hospitality products are already on sale for next year’s Epsom Derby Festival which is taking place from 3-4 June 2022. The Jockey Club will be releasing its admission tickets shortly. Despite restricted attendance numbers, this year’s crowd still created an electrifying atmosphere at the course, but sporting enthusiasts and big event fanatics alike will crave the roar of a venue at full capacity; not to mention the excitement it adds for the horses and jockeys.
Although Queen Elizabeth II – like countless other racing fans – will no doubt have wished to be present over the weekend, Her Royal Highness was not able to attend for only the fourth time in 75 years as Covid restrictions would have made for a less enjoyable race viewing experience. However, it was announced last week that the Derby 2022 will form part of the Queen’s Platinum Jubilee celebrations, making it a festival not to be missed.
Speaking of royalty, it is only a week until the 5-day royal meeting at Ascot begins steeped in tradition and pageantry. Royal Ascot has been given permission by the UK Government to have up to 12,000 spectators each day as it will act as a test event with levels of society continuing to open after the pandemic. Expect top fashion and fine millinery, as well as some of the finest racing in the world as the flat racing season gets into full swing.
