The Tokyo Marathon is an annual marathon sporting event in Tokyo, Japan, and is a World Athletics Platinum Label marathon and 1 of the 6 World Marathon Majors along with Boston, London, Berlin, Chicago, and New York.

The first Tokyo Marathon was held on 18 February 2007. Over 30,000 runners take on the race every year with around 150 professional elite runners competing for the fastest time.

No tickets are required to watch the Tokyo Marathon as it is a free public event. Simply find your spot on the roadside anywhere along the course, and get ready to cheer and clap as loudly as you can.

If the date of the event does change, it will not affect the validity of any viewing tickets you purchase for the event. 🧒 Child Tickets

If you have young children, you may want to avoid the busiest areas due to the density of the crowds. The finish line around Tokyo Station can be particularly busy during peak times.

The long marathon route means there are plenty of ways to access the course. Train is the recommended method of travel, particularly if you are viewing from multiple points along the course, as a number of lines run in parallel to the race route.

🅿️ Parking

Roads around the course start to close early and traffic may be busy, so try to park a little further away and allow plenty of travel time as traffic will be busy.

🚖️ Taxi

Taxis can travel to and from the areas around the entire course, but keep in mind that the main course roads close early in the morning as well as surrounding streets, and so you will need to leave early or take a route that does not intercept with the course.

🚆 Train

The finish line is right next to Tokyo Station while the start is by Shinjuku Station. Tokyo's excellent rail network make this a fantastic way to get around especially with road closures during the race.

Accommodation

Most things in Japan, including food and transport, are surprisingly inexpensive, but due to it being fairly overpopulated, accommodation is generally rather expensive. However, as the capital of Japan, it offers something for all tastes and budgets. Visitors can stay in some of the world’s most luxurious and expensive suites, or simply in a cheap capsule hotel.
