About Texas vs Oklahoma
The Red River Rivalry is a longstanding contest between the Oklahoma Sooners and the Texas Longhorns, both consistent heavyweights at the top level of college football. The teams first met in 1900, when Texas won 28-2. Since 1929, the matchup has taken place annually without interruption.
Texas was dominant in the early years of the rivalry, recording 6 wins and a tie in the first 7 games. Oklahoma got its first victory in 1905, but did not claim 2 in a row until 1910/11. Both teams have enjoyed long winning streaks at various points in history – the Longhorns won 8 straight Red River Rivalry games from 1958 to 1965, while the Sooners won 10 out of 13 between 2010 and 2021.
At the end of each game between Oklahoma and Texas, the winner is awarded the Golden Hat: a trophy in the shape of a 10-gallon cowboy hat.
