Texas has many top-level college football teams, but the rivalry between Texas and Texas A&M is one of the fiercest in the state. The matchup has a long history – the teams first met in 1894, and played each other multiple times per season in several early years of the 20th century. Texas won the first 7 contests, but Texas A&M finally recorded a win in 1902.
From 1910 until 1939, the rivalry was quite evenly balanced. The Longhorns then enjoyed a long period of dominance that stretched from the 1940s until the late 1970s, with the Aggies claiming just a handful of victories throughout those decades. Texas A&M flipped the script in the 1980s, winning 10 of 11 games between 1984 and 1994.
Texas A&M left the Big 12 in 2011, ending the uninterrupted run of annual games against Texas that had begun in 1915. The Longhorns joined the Aggies in the SEC ahead of the 2024 season, however, ensuring the return of the historic rivalry.
