Sunderland AFC is an English football club who typically play in the EFL Championship. Nicknamed the Black Cats, they play at the Stadium of Light.
📜 Sunderland History
The club was formally founded and announced on 25 September 1880, however Sunderland AFC's origins stretch back to the October of the previous year and the formation of a football team by Scottish schoolteacher James Allan.
Sunderland joined the Football League a decade later and won their first top flight title in the 1891-92 season. The victory paved the way to a great deal of early success; they had won 5 titles by 1913 and added a 6th in 1936. The following year, they won the first of their 2 FA Cups, with the other coming in 1973.
Despite the black cat being associated with the club for the majority of its history – until 1972 the club badge featured a black cat sat on a football at its centre – it did not become their official nickname until the year 2000 following a public vote.
