Founded in 1883, the San Francisco Giants began life on the East Coast as the New York Gothams, before taking on the Giants name 3 years later. During their time in New York, the Giants won 5 of their 8 World Series championships and formed famous rivalries with the New York Yankees and Brooklyn Dodgers.
One of the most significant moments in Giants franchise history occurred in 1957 when they joined the Dodgers in relocating to California. The Dodgers settled in Los Angeles and the Giants in San Francisco, becoming the first 2 teams to play on the West Coast in the process.
Despite the efforts of baseball legends like Willie Mays and Barry Bonds, it took the Giants 56 years to win their first World Series in the City by the Bay. After the breakthrough in 2010, more World Series championships followed in 2012 and 2014 to bring the Giants' total to 8 – fifth most of any MLB franchise.
