SailGP – or Sail Grand Prix – is an international sailing championship bringing new levels of speed and excitement to this ancient sport. When it was first established in 2019, SailGP involved 6 national teams and 5 Grand Prix races. Since Season 4 there have been 10 teams competing.
All teams use the F50 foiling catamaran, the first boat ever to reach speeds over 50 knots during a race. With everyone using the same model, teams must use their formidable skills and experience to gain an advantage in the water.
SailGP brings its high energy racing to some of the most spectacular sailing locations in the world. Beautiful settings, elite athletes, and top-of-the-range boats are sure to make this developing competition a fan favourite.
💯 League Format & Scoring
Every SailGP season comprises a number of Grand Prix races. Each of these events takes place over 2 days, during which teams take part in 6 fleet races and The Final. The fleet races involve all competing teams, who win points based on their finishing positions. When these 6 races are complete, the 3 teams who have earned the most points race in The Final, and one team is crowned the winner of that Grand Prix event.
After each of these events, the Championship Leaderboard is updated to reflect the performance of the teams. The winners of the Grand Prix receive 10 points, the second placed team 9 points, and so on down.
The last race of the last event of the season is known as the Grand Final. The 3 teams with the most points on the Championship Leaderboard qualify for this race, and the winners are the SailGP season champions, earning glory and a $1 million dollar prize.
