Katowice

Katowice is represented by GKS Katowice, a I Liga football team that plays its home games at GKS GieKSa Katowice S.A. and Naprzód Janów, a top tier ice hockey team that plays its home games at Jantor Janów.

Katowice is the capital of the Silesia Province in southern Poland which was ruled by Germany until the Polish Uprising in 1921 claimed Poland as its rightful owner. This uprising and resulting switch in power is a time memorialised not only in museums and monuments within the city but also within its citizens' hearts. Today’s Katowice was developed mainly by its coal mining industry, which greatly expanded the city in the 19th and 20th centuries with industrial architecture, and has now become a large part of the city’s heritage. The Silesian Museum utilises the former coal mining complex as the exhibition space for historic and contemporary art pieces that reflect the Silesia Province.
