The Panthers are the football team of the University of Pittsburgh, often shortened to Pitt. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) of the NCAA and play in the Coastal Division of the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC).
Pitt has won 9 national titles and 3 conference titles, and the program ranks in the college football top 20 for number of all-time wins. After playing as an Independent team until 1990, the Panthers competed in the Big East Conference for 21 years, moving to the ACC for the 2013 season. Pitt won the ACC Championship in 2021, finishing with a 7-1 conference record and eventually losing to Michigan State in the Peach Bowl.
Due to its historic status as an elite football school, Pitt has been involved in several "firsts" in college football. These include the first use of numbered player uniforms in 1908, the first live radio broadcast of a college football game in 1921, and the first nationwide live sports broadcast on TV in 1951.
The Panthers play their home games at Acrisure Stadium.
