About Navy vs Army
The Army Black Knights and the Navy Midshipmen face off every season in a fierce rivalry game. Along with the Air Force Falcons, these teams compete for the annual Commander-in-Chief's Trophy, and the Army-Navy Game is typically the final contest in each year's series.
The Black Knights represent the United States Military Academy in West Point, while the Navy Midshipmen play for the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis. The teams met for the first time in 1890, when Navy won with a decisive score of 24-0. Historically, most games between the teams have taken place in Philadelphia, chosen for its position roughly equidistant between the academies.
In 1893, Navy Midshipman Joseph Mason Reeves wore the first ever American football helmet during the Army-Navy game. Reeves had been warned by his doctor that another head injury could be fatal, so he commissioned a leather helmet to wear against the Black Knights.
