Naomi Osaka is a Japanese tennis player, and the first Asian female tennis player to be ranked as the number 1 singles player in the world.
Born in Osaka in 1997, Osaka's family moved to the USA when she was 3 years old. Her father soon began coaching both Naomi and her older sister, Mari, inspired by Richard Williams' mentorship of his daughters, Venus and Serena. Like the Williams' sisters' father, Osaka's father had no prior experience coaching tennis players.
Osaka did not take a conventional route to professionalism, choosing to skip the vast majority of ITF Juniors events and instead pushing herself against older players on the ITF Women's tour. In 2013, Osaka turned professional, and she made her WTA main draw debut in 2014, at the Stanford Classic; Osaka defeated top-20 player Sam Stosur in a mammoth upset in the first round, before losing in the second round.
Between 2016 and 2017 Osaka moved in and out of the top-50, but was still improving as a player. In 2018, she won her first WTA-level title at the BNP Paribas Open (Indian Wells), defeating then-world number 1 Simona Halep on her way to final. Osaka's next title came a few months later, on an even bigger stage, when she won the US Open, beating Serena Williams in the final. In 2019, Osaka won the Australian Open, becoming the first woman since 2001 to immediately follow-up a debut Grand Slam win. Her win in Melbourne meant she became world number 1.
Osaka won the US Open again in 2020, and also collected another Australian Open title in 2021. Since then, she has struggled with consistency; despite showing signs of the technical brilliance which has brought her multiple grand slam titles and the world number 1 ranking, Osaka has been outspoken about the tolls on her mental health. In 2021 she took a hiatus from tennis, returning in 2022. In 2023 Osaka left the tour again, announcing prior to that year's Australian Open that she was expecting a child.
Osaka mainly plays from the baseline, employing an aggressive, powerful style which is characterised by her potent serve and forehand. Her serve in particular is one of her best weapons, and one of the fastest ever on the women's circuit. Osaka is able to build points well; whilst she is fully capable of winning points with her fast groundstrokes, she is also willing to be patient during more attritional exchanges.

The experience at this WTA 500 tournament was great...even though it was just the qualifiers but the atmosphere was really awesome!
It was a good experience and the crowd management was pretty good, except for foreigners who attended with passport verification. It was not so convenient to reenter the Diamond Court without being escorted by the friend who booked the tickets on our behalf. The ushers at the gate kept on insisting to check the original booking on the mini app, and passport verification was not sufficient.
It was an amazing experience being the first time in China. The event was well organized, and the courts were clean. Watching the top players live was out of this world.
It was an experience of a lifetime, unforgettable. The only thing we would have loved is the use of Visa instead of drawing cash as some of us travelled far, we came from South Africa. We will definitely attend again
Very well organised n helpful staff

Great event which attracted many big names in tennis. Getting to the event and entry in to the stadium was easy and straight forward.
