About Mississippi State vs Ole Miss
In-state rivals Ole Miss and Mississippi State meet every season for the Egg Bowl, a heated rivalry game that dates back to 1901. Mississippi State won that first meeting (under the former name Mississippi A&M College), but Ole Miss got revenge the following season, and the early years of the rivalry were quite balanced.
The teams went on to alternate long periods of dominance, with the Bulldogs claiming every game from 1911 to 1925, and the Rebels recording 9 wins and a tie in the following 10 contests. Ole Miss took charge of the series in the second half of the century, allowing Mississippi State just 6 victories between 1947 and 1990.
The rivalry is nicknamed the Egg Bowl after the brass football trophy that has been awarded to the winner since 1927. Tom Patterson, a sportswriter for the Clarion-Ledger in Jackson, coined the name "Egg Bowl" in 1979.
