The Bulldogs are the football team of Mississippi State University in Starkville. They compete in the Football Bowl Subdivision of the NCAA and play in the Western Division of the Southeastern Conference (SEC).
Mississippi State is most famous for the tradition of fans ringing cowbells during games and to celebrate victories. Legend has it that during a game with fierce rivals Ole Miss, a jersey cow wandered onto the playing field, and the Bulldogs went on to win triumphantly. By the 1950s, cowbells were common at Mississippi State games, and despite many attempts to limit or ban their use, the Davis Wade stadium still rings out loud on gamedays.
